I don’t update. I have a Rebel XS and on the Canon site I read that it can be difficult and dangerous. Dangerous because if the download messes up or the install doesn’t go correctly, your camera may quite operating all together – then what? Well it’s off to the repair shop to have them re-install the original firm ware.
To me, if your camera is operating correctly, why would you bother and take this kind of a chance. I’m not willing to.
Updating your firmware is easy peasy, lemon squeezy. A child of six could do it, since basically all you are doing is downloading the update to your memory card and letting the camera take over. Just be sure your camera won’t run out of juice when you do the update. Otherwise you really might have catastrophic problems.
If there is an update available, I would take advantage of it. Sometimes the updates can be very useful.
I update my camera software the day it’s announced. Usually, the update solves a problem that has been discovered by photographers or enables features that lay dormant in your DSLR.
As far as difficulty, I’ve found it fairly simple and highly recommend it.

Good Luck
Why update? Is there something wrong with the old one?
It’s not like MS Windows that needs fixing all the time anyway.
Why fix something when it’s not broken?
So, how often do I update my dSLR firmware? Never.
