Thursday, April 22nd, 2010The new law on the protection of data leaves us vulnerable to attacks and data protection is a challenge which government can not seem ignoreEveryone very pleased with the arrival of the IPAD. It is the latest addition to a variety of mobile devices, we can change interact with people, businesses and, in some cases the government. It is a device for a world where people want the process of participation in modern society Slicker bits are interpreted. But this is not the devices themselves have caught my attention – is the number of ways people use it. Reducing the growth in applications, the daily operations of the automated functions is exponential. Paying for parking, the creation of digital TV recording at home, buying theater tickets, sell updating systems business – are now routinely made through the software on pocket digital devices, cell phones often. The phenomenal number of applications downloaded from the Apple App Store is an indication that we are rapidly moving to a truly digital society – an environment in which consumers, companies and government confidence in digital technologies to support their daily operations. This provides tremendous opportunities to perform tasks that previously streamline cumbersome to easily find the lives of consumers and reduce the operating costs of businesses. But it also presents some difficult challenges through these opportunities into reality it may be difficult to protect the privacy of individuals. There are problems for everyone. The companies that collect and store data – known as data controllers – now need to secure the amounts of increasingly large amounts of data. A society in the digital systems are part of the social fabric and commercial large amounts of data. According to research firm IDC created, 1,200 exabytes of digital data, this year – the equivalent of 10 billion copies of The Guardian. Safe storage of these data requires the development of new technologies beyond the current possibilities. Seller must pay in order to develop these technologies and if not, then who? The citizens of the possibility of paying bills with the click of an icon will benefit, but they are liable under current law, if a violation occurs against data. The changes last week to the Act on protection of data, individuals can claim for financial compensation if they can demonstrate a financial loss of data breach. It is incredibly difficult and provides no means of compensation for the distress of the privacy attacks caused. Today there is no way for individuals to consider taking data processing. This means they have to rely on the regulator to maintain the Office of the Information Commissioner (ICO) and redress. Given the ICO fines are limited to £ 500,000, the impact is on large amounts of data controllers if they are negligent, tiny. Both create a unique challenge for the next government. Thank you for creating the administration, the legal, regulatory and technical environment in which individuals and businesses to enjoy the benefits of new technologies, while feeling protected. To avoid the error, the opinion of politicians is that this environment can provide on its own. You can not. You must work with each community has an interest in the results. They need help from private supporters of the legislation that develop the best way to protect the citizens, businesses and government recognizes. You need to judge works with consumer groups, how people perceive the issue of privacy, so they can respond to the public of information security goes. You need to increase with the media to understand the country in order to protect privacy against attacks, so that basic mistakes in dealing with data from other people equally unacceptable to leave your car unlocked in a public place of work. And they absolutely should time the leaders of the technology industry to a better understanding of today’s technologies work, how they are used and how it will develop. It was only then that the decision makers really understand how to act as decision makers in a digital society. Only then can they build a framework in which the company can grow through new technologies, without continuously looking to see over the shoulder, where the next data is invasion of privacy.
